From the very beginning of Creation, God desired and intended for mankind to have fellowship with Him. This is what eternal life is…life with God. He wants that fellowship with you too! So, how do we have eternal life with God?
The Bible teaches that the very first humans (Adam and Eve) disobeyed God’s Word and, as a result, were separated (died) from fellowship with God in the Garden of Eden. Ever since that day, every human being that has lived has been born in sin. That means that we are sinners by nature and by choice. The Bible reveals that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). As a result death, or separation from God, was the human experience. So, the very first step in obtaining eternal life is to acknowledge, confess, and repent of our sin. That means to recognize that we are lost without God, turn around and away from our sin and turn to God and ask Him to be forgiven of our sin.
The Bible says that “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23) but the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is that Jesus Christ paid the price for our sin when He died on the Cross of Calvary. All of our sin was placed upon Him at the Cross and He took the punishment for us. So, when we repent of our sin, we have a place to go to in order to receive forgiveness; that place is the Cross of Christ. Beyond His death on the Cross, however, is the well documented fact that on the Third Day after His death He rose from the dead, proving that He was God and had conquered death. The second part of Romans 6:23 informs us that “the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. So then, we must believe (have faith) in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ in order to have eternal life.
Simply, the Bible tells us that “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). It is a gift God has given to you. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Just like a gift you receive from a friend, you don’t have to do anything to earn it…you just humbly receive it.
If you want to be saved, communicate to God your desire to live with Him and to receive His free gift of salvation. Here is a suggested prayer you can use or modify but remember, let your heart speak to Him.
“Dear God, I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sin. Please forgive me of my sin and give me the righteousness of Your Son, Jesus Christ. I place my life in Your Hands and receive Your gift of salvation from sin and new life in Christ. Show me Your ways and lead me to You. Amen”
If you have prayed and committed your life to Christ tell someone! Find a church that teaches the Word of God (the Bible) and begin to grow in your faith. You are a new creation in Christ…all of the old things have passed away (2 Corinthians 5:17). Hallelujah!
